Exploring the path of sustainable development under the weak cycle

Carbon fiber is an indispensable strategic new material for national economy and national defense construction, one of the most important reinforcements of advanced composite materials, and a typical representative of "new quality productivity" in chemical fiber industry. After years of development, China's carbon fiber industry has made remarkable achievements, not only filling the domestic gap, but also becoming an important carbon fiber producer and supplier in the world. It has basically built a carbon fiber independent technology system with Chinese characteristics, realized the diversified development of products, technology and industrial chain support, and formed polyacrylonitrile based (PAN), viscose based There are three types of asphalt based products, including four series of product systems of high strength, high strength medium modulus, high modulus and high strength high modulus; The precursor has formed a technical system in which the solvent is mainly DMSO, DMAc and NaSCN are developed together, and the spinning process is wet and dry jet wet; At the same time, domestic large-scale production equipment and key parts, as well as special oil, sizing agent and resin; Evaluation and characterization methods, and complete industrial chain facilities.

▲ Yu Jianyong

"The overall technical level of China's carbon fiber has entered the advanced ranks in the world, and new carbon valley, Zhongfu Shenying, Jilin Chemical Fiber, Weihai Guangwei, Jiangsu Hengshen, Jiangsu Aosheng and other key production and application enterprises have emerged." Yu Jianyong Academician said in his speech.

Compared with foreign countries, there are still some gaps in domestic carbon fiber, which are mainly reflected in the product quality stability, synchronization of production and processing applications, as well as the weak links in key equipment, raw materials and supporting materials, which are mainly due to the lack of maturity of domestic carbon fiber production and application technology. Under the new situation, how to improve the industrial technology maturity and expand the application scale has become the key to future development.

To this end, Yu Jianyong put forward three suggestions: First, strengthen basic research , break through the technical bottleneck from the source, rely on high-level talents, and promote the close combination of theoretical research and applied research; Second, strengthen industrial synergy , take the application demand as the traction, promote the technological breakthrough and cross integration of carbon fiber and multidisciplinary fields, achieve cross domain collaborative research and development and industrial application, and provide cost-effective system solutions; Third, strengthen active innovation Learn from the experience of chemical fiber industry technology development, improve the production efficiency and product quality of carbon fiber, pay attention to the independent design of carbon fiber and its composite materials, improve the original innovation ability, comply with the general trend of intelligent development, accelerate the application of new generation information technology, and promote the transformation and upgrading of carbon fiber industry to digital.

▲ End Xiaoping

Combined with the risks of phased overcapacity, imbalance between supply and demand and the corresponding analysis in the Investment Sensitivity Analysis of China's Chemical Fiber Industry issued by the China Chemical Fiber Association, End small flat They shared their views and thoughts on the current situation and future of carbon fiber:

First, the pressure on high-end manufacturing capacity has become the new normal, Similar to photovoltaic and other industries, carbon fiber also needs to be alert to the problem of volume increase and price decrease, and profit pressure. The key to the development of the industry is to increase varieties, improve quality and create brands, so that carbon fiber can help more downstream fields to achieve industrial upgrading, and then gradually undertake the continuous release of carbon fiber capacity.

Second, in the weak cycle, we should strive to "compete for clearance" while "holding together for warmth", On the one hand, it is necessary to solve the problem of sticking key equipment and raw and auxiliary materials, jointly promote the application and expansion of carbon fiber, and enhance the comprehensive competitiveness of the industrial chain; On the other hand, we should accelerate the elimination of inefficient production capacity in the market and concentrate resources on more efficient and high-quality enterprises. "We should pay special attention to that, as a single enterprise, in a short time, the potential risk of excessive and excessive capacity growth is that it may miss technological progress. One step at a time is the hard truth."

The third is to study hard, find the right position and strengthen confidence. The industry should concentrate resources to improve the stability of product quality, break through the difficulties in the localization of key technologies and equipment, further improve the detection and evaluation methods of fibers and products, and effectively enhance China's carbon fiber core technology innovation capability. "In the future, carbon fiber will still be the industry that the country focuses on and continues to support, but the direction of support has changed from" flooding "to" precision support "."

▲ Cao Chuanzhen

In recent years, the rapid development of China's carbon fiber industry has benefited from the high attention and all-round support given by relevant national ministries and commissions, especially the National Development and Reform Commission, such as improving industrial policies, adjusting the industrial directory and implementing relevant special projects. Deputy Director of the Industrial Development Department of the National Development and Reform Commission Cao Chuanzhen It was mentioned in the speech that in 2023, China's carbon fiber production capacity will be close to 140000 tons, with a year-on-year growth of 21%, and the output will be about 70000 tons, with a year-on-year growth of 53%. The industry scale will be among the top in the world, and the product performance will be steadily improved. Domestic carbon fiber will be gradually applied in high-end fields.

As for the development opportunities and challenges facing the industry in the new era, Cao Chuanzhen said that the Industry Department of the National Development and Reform Commission will continue to promote the high-quality development of China's carbon fiber industry in combination with the national strategic needs and the needs of national economic development. Specifically, we can focus on three aspects: First, improve the basic industrial capacity, We will continue to promote joint research on weak links, deepen the battle of upgrading the carbon fiber foundation and modernizing the industrial chain, and promote the overall technology and industrialization level of China's carbon fiber industry; Second, accelerate the cultivation of carbon fiber industry ecological chain, Support leading enterprises to play the role of chain length and drive the collaborative innovation and development of upstream and downstream enterprises; The third is to promote the sustainable and healthy development of the industry as a whole, We will give better play to the important roles of the market, the government and industry associations, optimize the industrial layout, avoid excessive investment and low-level redundant construction, and promote the standardized and orderly development of the carbon fiber industry.

The application air outlet should be targeted and prepared

"Use out" is one of the keys to the sound development of carbon fiber industry. With the in-depth development of defense industry, aerospace, rail transit, wind power generation, new energy vehicles and other industries, the market demand for lightweight, low-cost and high-efficiency preparation of applied material systems has been put forward. Carbon fiber composite is one of the best solutions to meet this requirement.

▲ Yue Qingrui

Among a variety of new high-performance civil engineering materials, carbon fiber composites have become mature and widely used in structural reinforcement technology due to their outstanding advantages such as light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, low temperature deformation and strong designability. Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Dean of the Institute of Urbanization and Urban Safety of Beijing University of Science and Technology, Director of the Yangtze River Delta Carbon Fiber Innovation Center Yue Qingrui The application of carbon fiber composites in civil engineering is introduced.

Facing the strategic requirements of green development and the "double carbon" goal, the use of high-performance civil engineering materials is of great significance to ensure the sustainable development of China's civil engineering industry. Compared with other traditional building materials, carbon fiber composites can achieve reduction and effectively reduce carbon emissions. In the demand of major projects, such as building a "transportation power" and a "maritime power", carbon fiber composite can break through the technical bottleneck of project construction and maintain national strategic security and resource security. For example, in bridges with a span of more than 2500 meters, carbon fiber has significant advantages as stay cables, and projects such as Sanya Stadium and Changtai Yangtze River Bridge also use carbon fiber composite structures.

Yue Qingrui stressed that the major progress of civil engineering is based on material breakthroughs, and fiber composites represented by carbon fiber composites have broad prospects. At present, China has led the world in the engineering application of carbon fiber composites. In the future, there will be a large number of application demands for carbon fiber composites in the fields of super span spatial structures, large scientific devices, landmark buildings, marine engineering and complex underground engineering. If the application difficulties in these fields can be broken through, carbon fiber composites will usher in explosive growth in engineering applications.

▲ Chen Nanliang

At present, there are also some technical bottlenecks in the development of composite materials, such as the single variety of reinforced fabrics, high cost of high-performance fibers, low processing efficiency of composite materials, etc. In combination with the industrialization project of large tow carbon fiber "multi axial weaving composite molding processing application", professor of Donghua University, director of the Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education of Industrial Textiles Chen Nanliang Multi axial warp knitting technology of large tow carbon fiber and its application are introduced.

Multi axial fabrics are composed of one or more parallel stretched yarn layers with different orientation angles, which form a stable surface structure through coil fixation. Compared with traditional woven fabrics, multi axial warp knitted fabrics combine the technical characteristics of knitting and weaving, showing higher tensile strength and elastic modulus (increased by 20% respectively), good drapability, less damage to yarn during knitting, and quasi isotropic characteristics. In addition, the fabric can significantly improve the processing performance of composite materials, with superior interlaminar performance, high fiber content, reduced resin consumption, and significant cost-effectiveness.

In terms of technical innovation, the project team Core technology and equipment of carbon fiber/glass fiber high-speed multi axial warp knitting machine, carbon fiber/glass fiber and mixed knitting multi axial fabric/knitting, and rapid prototyping of carbon fiber thermoplastic/thermosetting braided composites Breakthroughs have been made in such aspects as the development of 30 warp knitting equipment with independent control systems, full chain innovations such as fiber spreading, weft laying, yarn storage and monitoring, and the realization of accurate yarn laying. These innovative technologies not only improve production efficiency, but also endow products with the advantages of lightweight, low cost, designability, etc. to meet special needs.

"Compared with the economic and technical indicators of similar products at home and abroad, the production efficiency of the project products has reached the international advanced level, has obvious price advantages, and has been widely used in wind turbine blades, new energy vehicles and other fields, and has been recognized by many well-known customers. For example, the overall weight of the 380BL carbon fiber composite structure equipment cabin of CRRC is reduced by 38%, and the application effect is good in the pultruded skirt board of large section complex multi cavity fabric of rail transit, wind power T-beam, etc. " Chen Nanliang said. In the future, the continuous expansion of large tow carbon fiber multi axial warp knitted reinforced fabric in aerospace, wind turbine blades, high-speed trains, new energy vehicles and other application fields will bring more opportunities and development space for related industries.

▲ Liu Weiping

Carbon fiber composites have become the key structural materials for civil aircraft due to their high specific strength and specific modulus, good designability, integral molding and good fatigue resistance. Chief Engineer and Deputy Chief Engineer of Composite Material Process of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Composite Material Center Liu Weiping The application status and development trend of carbon fiber composites in civil aircraft are introduced.

"The massive application of carbon fiber composites has become an important symbol of the technological advancement of the new generation of civil aircraft, one of the important factors to reduce costs, improve performance and market competitiveness, and the only way to develop and develop large civil aircraft." Liu Weiping introduced that the proportion of composite materials in the Airbus A350 reached 52%, Boeing B787 composites account for 50%. The proportion of carbon fiber composites has improved the performance and economy of aircraft. According to incomplete statistics, the amount of carbon fiber used by Airbus and Boeing to produce aircraft is about 14000 tons. The composite material consumption of the domestic large aircraft C919 accounts for about 12%. Some domestic suppliers have undertaken the manufacturing of a large number of composite parts of C919, such as horizontal tail floor, automatic skin tape laying, hot diaphragm preforming of beams, etc., but the carbon fiber used is mainly imported. The consumption of C929 composite materials is expected to account for more than 51%.

Liu Weiping predicted that in the next 20 years, carbon fiber composites will also be widely used in civil aircraft. The research data proves that the improvement of aerodynamics has a greater impact on fuel consumption than the simple weight reduction. The next generation of single channel aircraft is expected to adopt the full composite wing design.

▲ Bao Yanxin

The carbon fiber market pressure in 2023 mainly comes from the cyclical adjustment of the inventory cycle of the industrial chain and the two or three major markets of wind power sports aerospace. In 2024, the photovoltaic industry will reach its lowest point, but sports, wind power, aerospace all show new growth space, and there will still be bright spots in the future. From the perspective of industry trend, the advantages of subdivision positioning and supply and demand pattern of high-end products will become more and more obvious, and the price advantage will also become more obvious. The research and development of more power product technologies of fiber enterprises will become an inevitable industry trend at the sales end. Deputy Director of Guotai Jun'an Securities Research Institute, Chief Analyst of Building Materials Industry Bao Yanxin The development of China's carbon fiber market since last year and its future development trend are analyzed.

As for the market situation in 2024, Bao Yanxin pointed out that the supply and demand relationship of carbon fiber continues to weaken at this stage. This year, the price difference between T700/12K products and T300/12K products has narrowed significantly, which means that T700 carbon fiber is gradually becoming a staple product. At present, the profit pressure of carbon fiber is at the bottom. Although the scale of production expansion planned by various manufacturers is still large, it is expected that the pace of new capacity release will slow down. From the perspective of application, this year, the sports, wind power, aerospace application markets show new growth space and still have bright spots. For example, in the field of sports and leisure, with the technological progress and capacity expansion of domestic carbon fiber enterprises, the demand for cost reduction and efficiency increase is expected to drive the downstream to accelerate the domestic substitution of carbon fiber, and domestic carbon fiber will occupy a larger market share in the field of sports and leisure; In the field of wind power, the trend of large-scale wind turbines is obvious, which will boost the permeability of domestic carbon fiber. On the whole, high-end products and fine cost reduction are the core in the face of intensified supply and demand contradictions. In the future, the advantages of subdivision positioning and supply and demand pattern of high-end products will become more and more obvious, and the price advantage will also become more obvious. It will become a trend for carbon fiber enterprises to strengthen the technology research and development of downstream products.

More solutions for enabling industries through joint efforts

▲ Li Fang

As a key material for low-carbon energy transformation, carbon fiber has attracted much attention due to its environmental impact in the production process and the carbon reduction effect of its application in wind turbine blades. Deputy Dean of School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Donghua University, Deputy Director of National Environmental Protection Engineering Technology Center for Textile Industry Li Fang The research on carbon emission in carbon fiber production process was shared. Through life cycle assessment (LCA), it was concluded that the environmental burden of carbon fiber production was mainly concentrated in the precursor spinning stage (accounting for 13% - 91%, with an average of 51.11%). The carbon emission in this process (32.80 kg CO2 eq.) was 2.82 and 2.18 times of that in the polymerization section and the pre oxidation section, respectively The impact on human health and land ecosystem is particularly significant.

In order to reduce its environmental impact, Li Fang proposed some sustainable production strategies, including changing the steam generation mode, improving the production process to increase the conversion rate, using recycling technology to produce renewable carbon fiber, improving the energy structure and increasing the proportion of clean energy utilization. "Despite the high energy consumption in the production process of carbon fiber, its application in wind power blades can significantly reduce blade weight and cost, improve power generation efficiency, and thus compensate its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in long-term operation. For example, in 20 years, it has significantly compensated its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in one month of operation. Therefore, from the perspective of life cycle, carbon fiber is still a reliable material in achieving the sustainable development strategy, but the environmental improvement and carbon reduction strategies in its production process still need to be continuously explored and implemented. "

General Manager of Changzhou Dames Testing Technology Co., Ltd Xu Jingwei The test solutions for materials and components in the wind power industry were introduced, and the comprehensive inspection architecture for wind power blades was shared. The architecture was gradually verified from the material level to the full size to ensure the effectiveness of material performance, structural design and product design. Among them, the experiments of components and parts are mainly discussed, including the evaluation of key parts such as blade root, main beam, secondary plate, front edge and rear edge. For example, the root performance is evaluated through glass fiber pultrusion wedges, and the performance of the joint between composite materials and metal is investigated; Evaluate the angle performance, adhesive life and stability of the main beam; At the same time, the connection and bending resistance of secondary plates and profiles are tested; In addition, structural experiments of I-beams and box beams were carried out, as well as the connection between lightweight wood and PVC in the shell part and the evaluation of profile guide angles.

"In order to adapt to the high performance of new materials, we have improved the test standards, including the optimization of fixture design and test methods, to ensure the accuracy of the test. At the same time, we have introduced multi-channel measurement, video monitoring and image recognition technology to achieve test automation and remote real-time observation; A material database has been established to predict material properties through big data, which can provide customers with more comprehensive services. These measures also provide strong support for the design and manufacturing of wind turbine blades. " Xu Jingwei said.

▲ Su Jianhui

Associate Researcher of Harbin Institute of Technology (Weihai) Su Jianhui The latest development of carbon fiber and composite alloy welding technology is introduced. He pointed out that foreign thermoplastic composite systems have matured and been applied in the aviation field, while in China, thermosetting composites are the main materials, and research on thermoplastic composites is insufficient. Therefore, domestic melt bonding technology urgently needs independent research and development and technological breakthrough.

Su Jianhui introduced that the welding between different materials, especially the welding between metal and engineering plastics (composites), has become a hot research topic at present. The connection difficulty lies in the large difference in thermal physical properties between the two, which makes it impossible to directly conduct fusion welding; It is difficult to form metallurgical bonding due to the large difference in microstructure. The solution is to discuss the connection feasibility and process optimization, and conduct multi-scale performance control of the interface.

The application achievements of metal/composite laser connection include the realization of the connection of the first large-scale structural sample of laser welding and resistance welding for industrial applications in the world, the independent design and construction of interface control platforms such as surface structured equipment, laser texturing, chemical synthesis, UV grafting, etc., the attempt and construction of metal/thermoplastic composite resistance welding Induction welding equipment and realize effective connection between the two.
