Washington, D.C. - The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently approved a new federal safety standard for baby shower seats.

The development of federal standards for infant bath products is the first time that CPSC has formulated safety standards for infant products under the guidance of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Promotion Act (CPSIA).

In the new federal standard, the existing American Materials Laboratory (ASTM) has been improved through a series of measures For example, by improving the stability to prevent rollover, strictly controlling the opening angle of the seat pillar to prevent the baby's legs from sliding in, and requiring a striking permanent label to remind parents and caregivers that the bath seat is not a safety device, and the baby cannot stay alone in the bath seat without supervision. In addition, this federal standard is also combined with CPSC's voluntary standards for sharp corners and edges, small parts, and lead content in paint.

The baby shower seat used in the sink or bathtub must provide back or front support for the baby in the bath, suitable for infants from 5 to 10 months of age.

From 1983 to November 2009, there were 174 infant deaths related to the bath chair, and 300 injuries related to it. Many of these accidents occur when the baby is unattended. Even a small amount of water may lead to drowning.

After collecting relevant information, CPSC staff found that there is no mandatory standard for infant bath seats on the market. The standard will take effect six months after it is published in the Federal Register. Manufacturers or importers of bath seats will be required to adopt new mandatory standards after that date.

It is reported that CPSC staff are developing mandatory federal standards related to 20 other durable products, including baby cradles, cribs, baby walkers, etc.
