Garment Orders Transferred From Myanmar To Philippines
Due to the military unrest in Myanmar, global brands are transferring their garment orders to other Southeast Asian countries and regions, including the Philippines. According to the international buyers Association of the Philippines (fobap), buyers, especially from the United States, have signed orders worth about $500 million with garment exporters in the Philippines.
Robert M young, President and trustee of the Federation of Philippine exporters, said at a recent online forum that the country had received orders from American fashion brands for basic baby game wear, women's wear, underwear and men's sportswear.
Philippine media reports quoted young as saying that the orders would be converted into additional foreign exchange earnings, jobs and livelihoods, which would flow to related industries.
According to the report of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in October 2020, the clothing industry in the Philippines has been hit hard by the epidemic, and the export has decreased by nearly 40%.
